Ichalkaranji
Assembly constituency no. 279, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. A textile city on the Panchganga, long called the Manchester of Maharashtra, and one of the most densely industrial urban seats in the western part of the state.

A city that runs on looms
Ichalkaranji recorded a population of 2,87,570 in the 2011 Census, making it the 151st most populous city in India. It sits at about 538 metres in the Panchganga valley, some 29 kilometres east of Kolhapur.
Its economy is textile. The city was recorded as holding roughly 1.25 lakh power looms as of December 2018, and it remains one of the country’s principal centres for grey fabric — with processing units, sizing and warping units and garment manufacturers packed into the same municipal limits.
That density is what shapes the constituency’s public business: water, power, effluent, roads and housing are all industrial questions here as much as civic ones.
