03 Background

Three generations in the same constituency

Ichalkaranji has returned a member of the Awade family to the Assembly in seven of the eleven elections held since the seat was created in 1978.

Rahul Awade’s grandfather, Kallappa Awade, won the seat in 1980. His father, Prakashanna Awade, held it across five terms — in 1985, 1995, 1999 and 2004 for the Indian National Congress, and again in 2019 as an independent. Rahul Awade succeeded him in 2024.

That continuity matters less as lineage than as working knowledge: the family’s public life has been bound up with the textile economy, the co-operative sector and the civic affairs of the same city for four decades.

05 The office he holds

What the seat carries

A Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is one of 288 elected representatives in the lower house of the state legislature. The office carries three standing responsibilities: to represent the constituency in the House, to take part in legislation and debate, and to pursue the constituency’s administrative business with the departments of the state government.

Ichalkaranji sits within the Hatkanangle Lok Sabha constituency, so much of the city’s business is carried jointly with its Member of Parliament and with the Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation.
